Comedians have been around for almost as long as society itself. Stand-up comedy is an art form of expression because it is often born out of a single person. Unlike film or television, or even music production, which are all ultimately collaborative mediums, comedians are typically on their own 100% of the time.
Many venues all over the country hold open mic events, where anyone can take the stage and perform for the audience. This offers an opportunity for amateur performers to hone their craft and perhaps to break into the profession, or for established professionals to work on their material.
If you’re lucky, you have a comedy clubs in your city. Many of these clubs have “open mic nights,” often multiple times a week.
While New Orleans doesn’t have a comedy club, you can still see stand-up every single night of the week. In the back rooms of bars and the side rooms of restaurants, comedians are getting up on stage with just a microphone and telling jokes that make people laugh. It’s a fun, amazing experience, and often times FREE!
