There are many comics that have made it out there, and some of their material has either been laced with hack jokes, and even completely hack. What do you think? Is it OK or not OK? Is it about being a great, original comic, or is it just about putting asses in the seat?
It should be about being original. I think that it is very possible to have similar ideas but sometimes it's very obvious.
I tweet quite a bit. My goal is to write mostly and because I live in a town that doesn't have many comedy venues I started putting my jokes on Twitter...a lot. Recently I read a tweet by Arte Lange about it's legal to follow people on twitter but not the street. I said something extremely similar on Twitter some 1 1/2 years ago. Mine was more like...and remember it's legal to follow people on twitter but not the street. I felt a bit out of tune about it naturally, but common sense told me that it must have been a coincidence. However, he is a royal pain because also about 1 1/2 years ago I flew to NYC to do an open mic/new talent thing at the Gotham. Can you believe it, there I stood with my friends and at the very last minute who decides to put the club on lock down to shoot a video...Arte Lange! " You cannot make this stuff up!
I also went to the new Comedy Zone in Columbia, it's only open like 1-2 nights per week, but one of the paid opening comics told a joke about he bought himself some breast implants, not for surgery but because he likes them. Ron White had that joke on his live CD recorded in Seattle about 2 years ago and it was something about he bought them for his wife but he hasn't given them to her yet.
I know that as a stand up, I do need work. I need the repitition of "just doing it" and I have to get past editing myself in the most peculiar places...the stage, but I can say I am pretty original because of my life. While I am not the first cancer survivor, because I had one of the female cancers I wrote a joke saying...I invited my GYN here tonight because I've always wanted him to see a completely different side of me. Also, I can wear something other then white and hey, if I make a complete ass of myself so what...he's seen it before.
